Ham and Cheese Strata

September 9, 2013

Simple, delicious and made while you are almost asleep.  Win, Win.  Prepare this at midnight and be ready for guests in the morning.  I am not at all a morning person and whatever time I have to get up I set my clock for an hour earlier because I just don’t function.  But I can prepare for early guests with recipes like this strata.

Ham and Cheese Strata

  • 6 C. Italian, French or German Bread (1″ cubes)
  • 1/2 lb. Sliced Ham (cut in pieces)
  • 1/2 lb. Swiss, Edam or your choice (cut in pieces)
  • 1/2 C. Scallions (chopped)
  • 6 Lg. Eggs
  • 2 C. Whole Milk
  • 2 T. Dijon Mustard
  • 1/4 t. Freshly Ground Pepper
  • Handful of Fresh Chives (snipped)

  1. Coat a baking dish with a little butter; spread half the bread over the bottom
  2. Layer with ham, cheese and scallions; repeat with another layer
  3. Mix the eggs, milk, mustard, pepper and chives together in a bowl and whisk
  4. Pour over the layered ingredients; let sit at least an hour (can be made to this point the night before) *
  5. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees; let strata sit out until room temperature
  6. Bake uncovered 50-60 minutes (will be puffed and golden; knife in center will come out clean)

*  If making the night before: cover with foil and refrigerate.

Serves: 4-6
