Applesauce

Start your day with this healthy homemade sauciness.  A great breakfast, side dish or snack.  I had not made homemade applesauce since I was a child, but when I saw this recipe I could not wait.  It is so simple and fast I cannot imagine buying a jar of applesauce again.  I found this wonderful website www.feastonthecheap during #FallFest 2010 where each week people submitted their recipes for different fall foods.  When it is homemade I can now enjoy it for breakfast with some granola cereal with raisins, dates and walnuts.

Applesauce

Ingredients

  • 3 lbs. Apples (any variety or combination)
  • 1 C. Water
  • 1 T. Fresh Lemon Juice
  • 3/4 t. Ground Cinnamon
  • Pinch of Ground Allspice
  • 3 T. Brown Sugar (optional)

Preparation

  1. Combine the apples with all the other ingredients in a stockpot and bring to a boil, stirring occasionally
  2. Reduce the heat to low; simmer covered until the apples are tender (about 30 minutes
  3. Remove cover and continue to simmer on medium-low until half of the liquid has evaporated (10 minutes)
  4. Remove from heat and mash the apple with a potato masher until chunky or puree in a food processor or use an immersion blender
  5. Cover and refrigerate or serve immediately at room temperature
